From his studio overlooking Old Street tube station – the grimy, vibrant heart of east London – award-winning young creative Geoffrey J. Finch curates infamous parties for his friends; dresses a growing collective of artists, musicians, writers and eccentrics; and creates cult international womenswear label Antipodium.
Inspired by the style-heavy Shoreditch neighbourhood in which he is notorious, capricious steals from pop culture and his rural Queensland childhood, Finch’s Antipodium has struck a chord with style obsessives the world over. Found in heavyweight department stores Harvey Nichols, Liberty, Lane Crawford and David Jones, Antipodium’s tongue–in-chic collections have also found their way into the wardrobes of fashion editors, stylists and a vast network of upbeat creatives.
Established in 2006, the label began as a happy accident: an eponymous one-off collection for London’s Antipodium boutique. Finch and company founder Ashe Peacock called upon Ashe’s sister Fenella, the woman behind successful 1980s Australian label Empire Line, to marry their designs with her experience and create a capsule range for the store. Its popularity was instantaneous – catching the eye of British Vogue and a Liberty buyer, the trio turned their attentions to the project full-time. Their complete debut collection launched to overwhelming acclaim at London Fashion Week in September that year.
Finch designs for women who are fiercely individual, confident and unapologetically seductive: no wonder Antipodium’s fans include Alexa Chung, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Juliette Lewis and Valentine Fillol-Cordier, and musicians Beth Ditto, Sia, La Roux, Little Boots, thecocknbullkid and Ladyhawke. Finch’s infamous ‘No Romance’ parties, co-curated with Modular Records’ Stevie King and staged in London and Australia, are less an image-building soiree than a chance to celebrate with Antipodium’s loyal, hedonistic fanbase (and often a couple of incongruous go-go boys for good measure).
In each of their five major collections and two party collections Antipodium has remained true to an addictively simple aesthetic: Finch creates unique, beautiful pieces that are witty, effortlessly cool and unselfconsciously sexy – just like its wearers.
